8 Things to Look for When Ordering Temporary Tattoos - Getting great impermanent art!

We all remember the temporary tattoos that came in bubble gum packets when we were kids. They were thin, looked raggedy within minutes of application and sometimes itched horribly ... and they have unfortunately turned many a company off the unique and effective strategy of using temporary tattoos to promote their business. Temporary tattoo technology has come a long way since the 1980s, but even 'beyond 2000' not all products are created equal. Here are 6 top tips for finding the right company to order temporary tattoos from.

What's the minimum order?

A fairly small minimum order for customised tattoos would be anything from 250 to 750. If your temporary tattoo company offers 'trial runs' like this, you can test response to a variety of different designs before making a large order.

Flexibility within order designs

When ordering any printed product, there are massive savings to be made by ordering more of the same design at the one time. Many good temporary tattoo printers will allow you to incorporate multiple designs within a single order at no extra charge. This is usually available on orders over 10,000 or so.

Four-colour printing

With the selection and quality of temporary tattoos that are now available, if your printer can only provide them in two- or three-colour process, most designs will look far less effective. Look for a printer that offers four colour process, and offers white as an optional fifth colour. Some good temporary tattoo manufacturers even include white ink for free!

Printing resolution

It's possible to achieve photographic quality in temporary tattoos nowadays ... although the level of detail that you should include is inversely proportional to the size of the tattoo. Smaller tattoos need less detail, larger ones can handle more. You can usually supply artwork in up to 300 dpi resolution.

Good 'stick time'

The longer your temporary tattoos last, the better an investment they are from a marketing perspective! You won’t find temporary tattoos anywhere that last longer than 7 days (apart from henna tattoos, which need to be painted on). Around 4-6 days is a good 'stick time' to expect.

Custom sizing available

If you can customise the design of your temporary tattoo, it will be invaluable to also be able to customise the sizing. Sometimes this cots a little more ... but there's nothing worse when you're designing something than being hamstrung by an odd size or shape for the product.

Are the products certified?

All kids temporary tattoos should conform to the Australian Standard on Toxicological Requirements for Children's Toys. They'll need to be made with non-allergenic inks, and be tested independently by government laboratories.

Directions included

Not everybody has used temporary tattoos before, and even some of those that have will have forgotten how to apply them. If you don't want an army of scratchy, peeling company logos walking around the streets, go for a product that has application directions printed on the back!
